Clinical Care
Behavioral care for sleep and circadian health.
Michael Grandner is a licensed clinical psychologist and Director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Clinic at Banner – University Medical Center. His clinical work focuses on behavioral sleep medicine, circadian medicine, clinical sleep health, cognitive behavioral therapy, and behavioral medicine.
Scope of care
Sleep problems in the context of health and daily life.
Insomnia and disrupted sleep
Evaluation and non-medication treatment of insomnia and related difficulties with initiating, maintaining, or obtaining restorative sleep.
Sleep timing and circadian concerns
Assessment of sleep schedules, timing, and circadian factors that may contribute to difficulty sleeping or functioning at the desired times.
Health conditions affecting sleep
Behavioral care when medical or mental health concerns interact with sleep, coordinated with other treating clinicians when appropriate.
Sleep health and behavior
Practical, evidence-based strategies addressing behaviors, routines, and contextual factors that influence sleep and daytime functioning.
Clinical approach
Assessment, formulation, and collaborative treatment.
Behavioral sleep medicine examines how thoughts, emotions, behaviors, physiology, health conditions, and the circadian system interact. Care begins by developing a shared understanding of the problem and identifying the factors that may be sustaining it. Treatment then uses evidence-based behavioral and cognitive strategies matched to the clinical picture.
Behavioral treatment does not replace medical evaluation when another sleep disorder or health condition may be involved. Care may include coordination with sleep medicine, primary care, mental health, or other clinicians.
What to expect
A structured clinical process.
- Clarify the concern. Review sleep patterns, timing, daytime consequences, relevant health history, prior care, and treatment goals.
- Develop a formulation. Identify the biological, behavioral, cognitive, and contextual factors relevant to the sleep problem.
- Build a treatment plan. Select appropriate evidence-based strategies and determine whether coordination or additional evaluation is needed.
- Monitor and adjust. Track sleep and functioning, review progress, and revise the plan as clinically appropriate.

Appointments are arranged through Banner Health.
Current scheduling, location, visit format, availability, insurance, and other operational information are maintained by Banner Health. This website does not collect medical histories or schedule clinical visits.
An important distinction
Clinical Care is not Personal Sleep Consultation.
Clinical Care involves evaluation and treatment within a healthcare relationship through Banner Health. Personal Sleep Consultation, when offered through Work with Michael, is a separate non-clinical service and does not establish a healthcare relationship.
